Sugar Ray Leonard Memorabilia

I met Sugar Ray Leonard and had him sign a boxing glove and a poster for me back in 1993. I even have a picture of myself I took with him that day(see below). My one groupie moment. I don’t usually seek out celebrities, but I am a boxing fanatic.

Ontario, California -circa 1993

Sugar Ray Leonard memorabilia  is very underrated. Unfortunately for me, I threw away the poster I had signed and my friend kept the signed boxing glove. That was seventeen years ago – and I was only in my early twenties. I was more enamored by just meeting the great fighter.

If you do a search online at the many sites which sell Sugar Ray Leonard memorabilia, you will see that a Sugar Ray Leonard autographed boxing glove sells for over $210 retail. Wow. That is a lot of money. If only I had him sign a glove for me. What was I thinking. After researching a little bit more, I found that there was another Everlast boxing glove for sale that was signed by Leonard that was selling for $295.00. According to the site, Leonard rarely does autograph signings – so I am kicking myself even more. It just goes to show you that by being young and not looking towards the future, I lost out on a few precious gems for my collection.

Since Sugar Ray Leonard memorabilia is somewhat coveted, there are a lot of fake items out there, especially on eBay. So be careful.

Sugar Ray did a multitude of Sports Illustrated covers, as well as boxing magazines such as KO and World Boxing. Signed copies of these magazines can fetch anywhere between $75 and $100 for a relatively mint copy.

Sugar Ray Leonard is an all time great welterweight and, in my opinion, will go down as one of the top 20 fighters of all time. The value of his autographed memorabilia will increase steadily over the next twenty years. With the state of boxing the way it is now, the purity and respectability of Sugar Ray’s era in boxing will be legend.
